Halloween inflation impacting families in Central Pennsylvania

Penn State Finance Professor Fariborz Ghadar said despite inflation numbers, consumer spending on Halloween has actually increased.

“They’re spending about 15 percent more, while prices have gone up seven percent more,” said Ghadar. “Inflation aside, people are really into [Halloween].”

“Pennsylvania is dependent on government payments, and if those government payments go away that’s going to have a really significant damaging effect on the economy,” Dr. Ghadar said. “The economy slows down, jobs will be lost.”

In wake of the Silicon Valley Bank collapse, efforts to ease concerns run in central Pennsylvania

Bank run concerns are contagious and can spread to other banks, like New York-based Signature Bank, which collapsed on Sunday.

“Is this a risk? Yes, it is a risk. That’s the federal reserve and the bank regulators, FDIC stepped in so quickly. That’s why the Bank of England stepped in so quickly. And they did it to basically calm everything down,” said Fariborz Ghadar, professor of finance at Penn State University.

“These large companies got really worried that they won’t have enough employees in the high tech sector that they want,” Penn State University William Schreyer Professor of Finance Dr. Fariborz Ghadar said. “So they over hired and now they’re basically gradually letting some of them off. And then in some companies where things have slowed down, you see a substantial number of people being laid off.”

“So, if your demand slows down the prices will go down, but if your demand doesn’t go down, then you will not see the prices go down as rapidly,” he said…”

“I definitely think it’s going to be the biggest Cyber Monday,” Dr. Ghadar said. “Remember, shopping online is three times more popular now than in store.”

Holiday spending could be costly this year as inflation drives prices up

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released the October Consumer Price Index Thursday. The index rose 0.4% last month, showing inflation is cooling down.

“Really, from a consumer point of view, just slightly lower,” Penn State Smeal College of Business Professor of Finance Dr. Fariborz Ghadar said.
